Sparking the Blogger

I've never been one to shy away from tension, which is the spark behind this blog. It's coming to you after a heated disagreement with my roommate about something I'm quite passionate about. You guessed it: agriculture.

So here I am, funneling my emotions into a productive use of my sleepless time. I'm consumed by our argument, not because I want her to change her mind, but because I want her to at least see all sides of the issues. Her main interest? Animal rights.

Now, after two years living together and endless stories about the farm, why doesn't she understand how much I care about my livestock? How can she think animal rights groups are actually trying to make her dog's life better?

I'm scared to death to see my closest friends and family, who've grown up on farms or in rural communities, have been fooled by myths and untruths circulating around these days.

So what's the roomie's deal? A closed mind. (Ironic, considering that's the slam I always hear against agriculture.) She's not even willing to hear my side. Like I said, I'm not asking for her to reform to my beliefs. All I'd like is a civil conversation to learn from each other. I've come to find that's certainly not something she's interested in. Hard to believe, huh?

So here I am, turning to the Internet to tell my story in hopes that it will reach people who actually care to learn more. One thing's for sure, I'll learn more just by initiating and moderating dialogue. Not to mention, writing is my secret weapon when I get upset. So there you have it, when in doubt, I can post when I'm stressed or can't sleep.

Hopefully my interactions with family, friends, and strangers will provide educational and entertaining reading for anyone willing to join me on this adventure!

Animal "rights" tends to be emotive, even the use of the term "rights" is misleading and selective. Persons supporting "animal rights" are invariably arbitrary about which animals they want to give "rights" to.

How does roomie define "rights" in the following example?

For example: Rats infesting farms, restaurants, houses, granaries and mills are removed/killed by the thousands nationwide so that their feces, urine and hair do not contaminate food. But rats still cause billions of dollars in ruined food and structural damage. They create electrical fires by gnawing through wires. They do this because they want to survive too. Don't they have rights to destroy food and housing?

Many vegetarians ignorantly consider the end product of same grain and seed products to be 'vegan'--or cruelty free. How did that happen? Closed minds? Ignorance?

Another dichotomy? Some ARs disapprove of rats being used in research labs, yet happily chow on grains and seeds that are clean due to the practice of diligent vermin control.

"Animal rights" groups usually adhere to dogma rather than analyze data as independents.

Another person wrote a nice summary here on Yahoo Answers regarding a related question of "double standards": clickie here - Be sure to check the original question which spurred this comment.

Thank you both for the comments. I am so glad to already have feedback from this venture.

Jared, to answer your question I have to acknowledege that personal perception plays a major role. It depends on "who" is being helped. These activist groups have a mission to end our ability to interact with animals. If you agree with that mission, then it seems logical that they are, in fact, helping.

My belief is that animals are an important part of human life. With this relationship comes responsibility to care for our animals in humane ways. Most people don't see the difference in animal welfare and animal rights.

My goal is to discuss this through future blog posts, to allow for more detail. I have one mission in mind: to protect our human rights to interact with animals.

SL, that's a great question. I need to ponder ways to discuss that further. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of open communication because of differing views. Be looking for more info with later posts (coming SOON!)

I look forward to more discussion as I write future posts.
